After the Quake - Ufo in Kushiro
This short story is filled with uncanny elements. With it's historical background and basis from real life natural disaster events, it envelopes the reader in a sense of mystery. The mentions to the UFO are not quite credible to the reader, and thus the supernatural elements fall completely short and the story is merely uncanny. There are moments when analyzing the text that you wonder whether the package has something to do with the possible UFO, and whether that is related to the earthquake. His wife leaving with a note is quite explainable when you learn of his background and the lack of communication they experienced for an extended period of time. Throughout the story you wonder if it will suddenly shift to the fantastic or supernatural, with the odd description of the Keikos walking. Also, the way they found the husband with the package was very uncanny seeing as he had no identifying feature without carrying the package. This builds a tone of wonder and mystery throughout the text, without which it would have been an incredibly mundane piece without much purpose. The reality of the text is very bland, merely a breakup and a trip to a nearby city via plane. The only thing in the text keeping the readers eyes skidding from one word to the next is this sense of wonder developed throughout the piece. When the short story ends, this mystery seems to crash down completely and you're left with a sensation of being completely ripped off by reading it. The ambiguity in the text, although left unexplained, completely crashes down. Despite the contents of the package remaining a mystery, without a fantastic event occurring, I find that I don't really care what the package contained. I'm left with a sense of mild amusement at the coworkers odd manner, and overall frustration. The bottom line of this story is that there is no climax. Without a climax, the story falls flaccid just as Komura did in his failed sex endeavors at the end of the piece.
